Are you or any of your friend is planning for LADAKH??? You need to know some of the basics before planning | Here is the guide.!!! Leh Manali Highway Expert Guide..!!
Ladakh is always a dream destination for every biker. Every biker wants to click a photograph over Khardungla top, the worlds highest motor-able road.
However, It is not that easy as it seems. Ladakh is the land of mountain passes and here the altitude starts from 8000 feet and goes till 22,000 feet.
Starting from Manali you will encounter with Rohtang pass. Rohtang pass is at 13,051 feet is one of the highest mountain pass of Himachal pradesh. After you cross Rohtang you will enter into Lahul valley, where it self is one of the coldest place of Earth. As you cross Keylong and Jispa you will now meet with the Mighty Baralachala. Even today, if you will see the deep valley beside Baralacha you will see some vechicles inside it, yes surely the accidental cases. Baralacha la is one of the coldest mountain pass and is at an height of 16,400 feet. You may experience freezing of your fingure tips here at this streach.
People from south India, like Banglore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Kerala experience more problem that the people from North. All just about weather condition, as South experience almost NO cold season.
After Baralachala there will be a halting point, where one will get the option to stay in tents or dhabas. Dhabas will cost Rs 200 per night apart from food. There is also a liqor shop in Sarchu where you can get Beer or Rum easily. Yes, there are no phone network in Sarchu not even BSNL postpaid. There is a satellite phone available there, which can work only on your luck.
After Sarchu, there is a 80km long off road strech. The road condition is pathetic over there and the pin bend of 21 loops of Gataknow as Gata Loops makes it more scary. Once you get over with Gata loops there will be a small stopagge where you will get couple of shops, it is just before Lachungla. Lachungla is at an height of 16,600 which indeed is more than Baralacha or Rohtang.
After lachung la, PANG is very close. PANG is another option of stay after Sarchu, coming from Manali side. It is always advisable to stay at Sarchu not Pang as Pang is at more height than Sarchu. At Pang, the off road gets over and now you will be able to ride on smooth tarmac roads.
Right after Pang, there are More plains. You will be amazed to get a plain road in Himalayas for about 30-35 km, but I am sure you wont be able to speed up more tha 70-75 kmph even pulling your complete accelerator.
After more plains, small town name Debring is there where there are option of Tea & Maggie. After Debring, you will head towards Tanglang La which is at an height of 17,480 feet and is known as worlds second highest mountain pass.
After Tanglang la, you would be able to see many villages around which means that LEH is not far. You may be stopped by local police for a normal register entry and you can reach LEH in just an hour from there.
